The once glorious Chinese civilization was in decline in the nineteenth century. Natural disasters, famine, economic downturn, and a population explosion coupled with internal rebellion and external imperialistic aggression, all led to the downfall of the Qing dynasty. While the Qing clung to China’s conservative past, China could not compete in the modern world. The Qing were overthrown by the Republican Revolution of 1911 (Wu). The reformation and ascension of modern China was slow when compared to Imperialist Japan.
