The Tokugawa Shogunate ruled feudal Japan from 1603 to 1868. Japan isolated itself from the world in 1641 from fear of Europeans. They were afraid that the Europeans wanted to colonize Japan and of missionaries coming to convert the Japanese to Christianity. They believed if the daimyos converted to Christianity, they would no longer follow the Shogun’s rule. Thus began Japan’s self imposed isolation, which lasted two centuries (Fitzgerald).
